"I’m giving you full permission to give up the “just one bite” or “no thank you bite” rule.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
The nutrition in a single bite of broccoli is basically non-existent. So if you’re doing it for the nutrients, you’re better off just offering them a piece of fruit that they actually like. (Just sayin’!)⠀⠀
⠀⠀
If you’re doing it because you just want them to eat a DANG VEGETABLE FOR ONCE...it’s also not worth it. Because this rule basically teaches them that veggies are lame, and they have to be forced to eat them.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
I kind of talk about this a lot, but it’s because I reallllllyyyyy want you to believe it. By serving healthy foods with a meal, you are doing your job. You are not responsible for what they end up putting in their mouth. So don’t judge your success based on what goes in their mouth!⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Judge your success by exposing them to healthy foods, by including colorful foods on their plate, and by enjoying a meal together that isn’t overshadowed by power struggles about how much broccoli they need to eat.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
You’re in this parenting thing for life, right? So remember that the habits and behaviors that you instill in your little ones now are WAY more important than the one bite of broccoli they eat at dinner!⠀
⠀
⠀
✨ Some parents tell me that they need to encourage their little one to try something and then they end up happily eating it all. And that’s okay if that works for you! Remember to keep it positive and not forceful - aka - “how about trying a bite of broccoli?” Instead of... “YOU HAVE TO EAT A BITE OF BROCCOLI 😡!”⠀

Random piece of trivia for the day: the first Plastic was invented in 1869 by John Hyatt. Errrr... good one, John! He wanted to create a substitute for the ivory being used in billiard balls that was driving the mass slaughter of elephants for aforementioned ivory. Nawww... John, dude. Sorry. Forgive me for what I said when I was angry 🐘💗. Those good intentions went awry when - post World War II - plastic “went viral” in day to day lives. We started using a material that last forever for functions that required minutes.
My point is, the 1950s aren’t so long ago. These are relatively new habits. A teeny speck on the time spectrum of humans on Planet Earth. So it reeeeally shouldn’t be that hard to simply dial it back a notch. Adopt the sensible, more resourceful, less plastic habits of our grandparents. It isn’t that hard. It’s common sense.

Here are some ideas inspired by yesteryears on how to store food without all the plastic.

Fresh vs. frozen - which do you prefer? 🥦 🍓 .
An easy money saving hack would be to go with frozen over fresh veggies & fruits.
.
Studies show negligible differences in nutritional value when it comes to frozen vs. fresh produce.
.
In fact, frozen might have more nutrient dense properties since it’s picked when ripe & immediately frozen 💫
.
Whichever fits your preference, I would try to stick to organic with the “dirty dozen” list of foods & you could skip organic on the “clean 15” list (but remember eating veggies & fruit is better than not eating veggies & fruit either way).
.
Dirty dozen: strawberries, peaches, celery, pears, nectarines, bell peppers, spinach, cherries, grapes, tomatoes.
.
Clean 15: broccoli, cauliflower, cantaloupe, kiwi, honeydew, eggplant, mangos, asparagus, papayas, frozen sweat peas, onions, cabbage, pineapples, sweet corn & avocados

Veggies can be such a source of frustration for so many parents! There's such an emphasis on getting veggies into your kids, but just how should you do that?! First, the number one thing you can do is expose them to veggies! Make veggies a part of your normal, every day life. With this strategy, though, you really are playing the long game. It could take months, or even years, before you see results. But then one day, your kid will surprise you and pick up and eat the veggie that you've been patiently serving.

In the meantime, you can try some of the above ideas to help expose your kids to new veggies. ✅Use veggie cookie cutters to make them into fun shapes ✅Serve with a fun food pick. It's amazing what a difference a little thing like this can make to a child's perception of a food! ✅Let them help to prep the veggie. It's a great no pressure way to expose them to it, and they may just surprise you and want to nibble on some of it. ✅Bring them to the store with you to pick out a vegetable they'd like to try. Giving then ownership and control of the veggie experience can make it fun and inviting for them! ✅Season it with spices, butter, garlic, really anything! Change what you serve it with frequently, and if you have older kids let them help you decide what to put on it sometimes. ✅Eat veggies yourself! If you eat your veggies and don't make a big deal out of it, your kids are so much more likely to eat them too!

The bottom line is take the pressure off of eating vegetables. They're just another food that you serve to your kids. Keep offering veggies, try these different ways to expose them to new ones, and know that by following these, there is a very large chance they will learn to like veggies eventually. You just have to be patient. 🤷‍♀️(And in the mean time, fruit really does have a lot of the same nutrients to bridge the gaps)

A good week starts with chocolate. A great week starts with chocolate brownies that are sweetened only with fruit and have a natural protein boost from chickpeas! (But this is the dietitian speaking. How does a great week start for non-nutrition nerds? 🤔)⠀
⠀
My 4 year old loves these so much that I had to share them with you. The recipe is by @heather.happykidskitchen and it’s from our new ebook No Sugar Still Sweet. Make sure to save this post so you can make the recipe when you have the ingredients on hand!⠀
⠀
✨ Two-Bite Brownies ✨⠀
⠀
Makes 24 mini brownies⠀ ⠀
12 Medjool dates, pitted⠀
1 15-ounce can chickpeas, drained and rinsed (about 1½ cups)⠀
½ cup almond butter or sunflower seed butter⠀
1 tablespoon avocado oil or melted coconut oil⠀
1 teaspoon vanilla extract⠀
¼ cup cacao powder or unsweetened cocoa powder⠀
¼ cup almond flour or oat flour⠀
½ teaspoon baking powder⠀
¼ teaspoon baking soda⠀
¼ teaspoon fine salt⠀
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Liberally grease a mini muffin tin or line with paper liners⠀
2. Add dates to a bowl or a glass container and cover with a ½ cup hot water. Set aside for 5 to 10 minutes⠀
3. Add all ingredients to a food processor. After soaking, add dates with the water. Process until smooth, stopping a few times to scrape the sides of the bowl⠀
4. Scoop batter into prepared muffin tin, filling each to the top
5. Bake for about 20 minutes

Just in - eggs are bad for you. Strawberries are good for you. Except, actually, strawberries are bad for you if they aren’t organic. Oats. OMG, oats are definitely poison. Unless organic, then only sometimes poison.🍓🥚🙄⁣⠀
⁣⠀
Anyone else feel afraid? Dejected? Sick of the whole thing?⁣⠀
⁣⠀
How can we move past a culture of fear around food?⁣⠀
⁣⠀
🍓First, be thankful. I can say thank you… to God, to the farmers, to my children eating with me, to myself for preparing the food, to the animals for making it, to the earth. Too many people don’t have enough food.⁣⠀
⁣⠀
🍓Also, it matters what I eat. Eating more veggies and fruits, and less processed foods matters. It makes a difference for me and my kids. I don’t diminish that. If a food makes me or my kids feel bad, I can remove it.
⁣⠀
🍓Next, I can accept the reality. Every food has benefits. Every food has a dark side. It’s just true. If I stop eating oats, what will I eat? Wheat? Nope, same problem. Rice? Nope. Arsenic. Lentils? Nope, pesticides. You see my point. ⁣⠀
⁣⠀
🍓I read the abstracts of many studies about why foods are are good and/or bad. There are thousands. They can’t be summarized in a headline. Most writers are irresponsible in how they report on research studies and how they write headlines. Research isn’t black and white.⁣ ⠀
⁣⠀
🍓I don’t live in a perfect world. If I take out one of these “bad” foods, what food am I going to replace it with?Removing without replacing often leads to nutrient deficiencies. ⁣
⁣⠀
🍓Finally, I choose variety - variety can “dilute” the "dark side” things.⁣⠀
⁣⠀
🍓If pesticide levels in foods are important to someone, they buy organic. I don’t have a hard line on this though, because most people can’t afford them. Plus, there is no research showing that only people who eat organic are healthy. Eating fruits and veggies is almost always better than not eating any. That’s my hard line 🍓What do you think?

Loaded statement, na? I do think we are blessed i Loaded statement, na?

I do think we are blessed in India to have such a huge tradition of cooking fresh everyday. 🍲🥘 So while, yes, we are moving towards a very ‘product centric’ diet, we continue eating #realfood too 🍅🌽🥥🥕 .
.
As a #nutritionist mom, I do lean towards cooked and raw food over packaged ones. However, it’s not mutually exclusive in my book. 👩‍🍳 Packaged stuff is important and necessary in our #modernlifestyle . Hence the proliferation of so many #healthyfood brands focused on kids (go to link in bio for more info on these brands) . For travel, for school and sometimes just for a change, a parent needs to play around with a variety of choices.
.
.
🤔What’s your take on this?
🤔Do you rely on packaged food or snacks at least once a day(I do!), even if it’s just a couple of biscuits or a handful of cheeslings? .

The daughters constant refrain means that I am always on the lookout for newer things for her to do. After all, being obsessed with healthy food is just one part of being a parent 😬. You gotta stimulate kids mentally too! And frankly, there’s only so much reading and colouring a child can do, howmuchever she may love them!

Art in any form, stir up imagination and gives sense of wonder.
For children art can be very educative, they learn colours, sensory stimulation, simple maths, refine their fine motor skills, improve hand eye coordination etc.
.
But three extremely important learnings, which a child can gain through art is FOCUS, CREATIVITY and SELF EXPRESSION.
.
With every art piece a child create, he is using his creativity, his visions, wonders and his sense of world.
.
It's important to provide child with right tools, supplies and environment to build up child's interest in art.
.
Always provide large paper of sheets, flat brushes and non toxic paints to your lil artist.
.
Most parents avoid giving their child paint fearing all the mess and stains it will cause. But in my experience, mess is there for a very brief period of time during child's art journey(usually while they are exploring the texture and feel of the colours). Soon the discipline and focus kicks in and child's whole attention shifts to creating masterpieces.
.
The best way for worry free art session is to use homemade paints as they are child friendly, environment friendly and home friendly 😋
.
Things you need- flour, salt food colours and water.
Add flour(1spn) in small bowls. Add equal amount of salt. Add few drops of food colour. Mix water to get paint like thick consistency(shouldn't be dripping)..Viola!! Your paint is ready, create as many shades as you are willing to, and let your child paint.

Toddlers love new tastes and hate that same mundane menu. So, I always try to come up with new breakfast, lunch and dinner ideas and even snacks for Ahaan. So, one of my neighbor whose daughter is also threenager shared this recipe of Neer Dosa with me and believe me, my baby just love it. N honestly ask for me 🙈 for me it a great breakfast option for kids as it's tummy fulling and tastes good too. .
Sharing the recipe (Neer Dosa) 📝
.
- Soak it in 1½-cups water for at least 3-4 hours. Wash it properly, drain excess water.
.
- Grind the rice in a mixer grinder or blender. Add grated coconut in it.
.
- Grind until smooth batter. Add water as required to grind the rice smoothly. Don’t add too much water while grinding, as it would make it difficult to grind the smooth batter.
.
- Add salt according to the taste and heat a non stick dosa tawa/skillet over medium flame. Make sure that tawa is hot. Pour the batter until it covers center of the surface. Immediately tilt the tawa in a circular motion to spread batter evenly into thin circle. And it's ready 💁
